Dr. Sam Education Centre is a non-profit educational Centre in northern Sri Lanka, named after Late Dr. Sanmugam “Sam” Jegarajah, a medical practitioner, who passed away in March 2018, but who left an endowment for the educational upliftment of children with limited means, after the prolonged civil war.

The Centre commenced with a temporary one large classroom which was extended to accommodate the accompanying increase of students and staff and computer facilities. It started to support underprivileged children from kindergarten, up to Grade 6-11, from the nearby townships of Kumarapuram surrounding Paranthan, in the Kilinochchi District, of the Northern Province of Sri Lanka.

The Centre began with an intake of 20 students in 2016 with day classes, with subjects covering only English as a second language and IT for beginners, but has since progressed gradually over the past seven years, to add not only more children in its Montessori section but also to its Junior School, with increased teaching and ancillary staff.

The Centre progressed to teach other school examination subjects in 2017, increasing student numbers to 60 students and with 6 teachers and 4 administration support staff, in attendance. The accommodation at the Centre, was extended with the accompanying increase of students and staff and computer facilities, to cater for the increasing demand. The Centre hopes in the future to apply for accreditation status from the Education Department of the Government of Sri Lanka and is in communication with the District Education Office.

In January 2019, it added a Montessori section with 2 students and one teacher and in June of the same year, the number of children increased to 6 with the same teacher. During 2020, evening class students were organized. It enrolled students to higher grades, with a total intake of 150, while the Montessori day class was conducted with one teacher and 20 children. In 2021 the number of Montessori students increased to 40 with 4 teachers.

In 2022 evening, class students are today around 130 with 12 staff and 6 support staff, while Montessori section has 5 teachers with 50 students. In 2023 evening, class students are today around 150 with 15 Teachers, 04 Admin staff and 4 support staff, while Montessori section has 5 teachers with 50 students.
